My students have been working very hard on creating their music videos about Cyber Bullying.

They collaborated on Edmodo, used Open Office to write their scripts and Storyboarded with Storypages.

We also had a lot of fun playing a day of acting games to get into character

I think we are running out of steam now as some of the students are getting disruptive or tired of shooting the same stuff – so I am hoping that they can start editing their project soon using WeVideo once they have everything synced with Dropbox.

How to make movies in your class part2: #Storyboard on #CyberBullying w/ @spinthought Storypages app #mlearning #film

Students collaborated to write their scripts, break them down into a shooting schedule and then they received a stylus pen and an IPod with the Storypages app to plot out their film (see what you missed in the recent post)

Storyboarding is a serious step when planning the production of their film. I showed students my examples of storyboards that I had done on my own films in the past, along with the samples of Josh Sheppard on his Storyboard sample website

Basically, a Storyboard artist takes a script and works with the Director to help plot out the visual sequential order of shots that need to be filmed. Storyboarding is used in commercials, movies, music videos – and a whole lot more. Sometimes the sketches can be very detailed, and sometimes not – but as long as their is some use of planning done, it helps save time in production.

To help ease the student frustration, I showed them the storyboard to film comparison from a segment of Nightmare Before Christmas

I think the students using the app went quite well, as some of them were using Storypages in the past, and it is a fairly easy app to pick up. They can make a scene just a drawing, a drawing w/text or just text. 

After the students broke up into groups to see who had to draw what, I tried to work around the “sharing” issue of our guest wireless server that the IPods use so that I could easily get the student samples off and then print them off for the students.

Unfortunately, there were several issues against us. The email option that the IPods use could only handle 10 mobile devices, and our school has a total of 59 IPods (you do the Math). So some of the students could email me their storyboard as a .PDF, which was the best option, whereas several others got locked up in cyber space somewhere.

The other option is to export all of the images to the IPod’s Camera Roll. Which I then had plug that IPod into the Macbook and import them via IPhoto. From IPhoto create an album, copy the contents of the album to a folder on the Macbook’s desktop and then upload those images to my Posterous site (phoo!)

Above is an example from Ipod 6, it would seem the exporting, importing, uploading has shuffled the images around a bit. I am not sure if this student’s work is in the proper order but I am just happy it is up. NOW – should I go through the process of combining all of these into a .PDF to print for them too?!

But after all is said and done, and I was able to go through the process of printing this work off for my students – it would seem the majority of them didn’t even use the boards when they started to film.

I recommended that they take their boards with them, and as they finished shooting a scene, their Producer should mark it off of their shooting schedule.

Perhaps I just gave the students an excuse to get distracted with other apps on the IPod or just wasted their time to delay filming – but I really wanted them to understand the planning process when it comes to film production.

Our next step of the film process is to review the film clips that they shot (dailies) and perhaps do some acting excercises and games. To check out my Prezi lesson plan you can modify it to use in your own classroom and do film making in your class

 

How to make movies in your class part 1: Student scripts on Cyber #Bullying w/ @TeamOpenOffice #cue12 #ctl2012

My 8th graders worked in teams and each picked up roles to create a film making team in order to create a music video on cyber bullying.

The teams divided up into different roles: Director, Producer, Cinematographer and Writer/Actor/Production Assistant

With the assistance of Edmodo, I created the assignment for each student in the group to come up with their own “draft” of a script that demonstrated knowledge of cyber bullying, which could be used as a public service announcment to our school on its dangers

This was a little difficult at times, as some of the students were frequently off task, did not like to write or they frequently lost or didn’t know where they saved their file using Open Office.

A few of the total fourteen film making groups got their stuff together, and their writer delivered the final script that you see before you on this page

In the mean time, the groups had their producer analyze the script and break it down into a shooting or production schedule. Telling me where they will be shooting on which days, with which props and costumes.

After their schedule was done, they had to storyboard it using the Ipod app: Story Pages (which will be an upcoming post)

And even a few of them got to actually start to film already, but I think we are going to take a little break to focus on acting and continuity

As the students go through the program, I asked them to reflect upon what they have learned or insights into using the site

By around Day 3 of using the excellent web site, Gamestar Mechanic, the students get challenged and highly engaged as they play through the various episodes and learn game design 

Each episode has several missions on it. Some of the missions get harder as they go, especially the time challenges

I try to tell the students that they should beat the level themselves, as it is so gratifying when they truly EARN the sprites/avatars that can be used in their own games in the future

If only more things were set up in the classroom where we give the students short obtainable goals, such as defeating a boss or solving a puzzle. From what I have seen this week, my students have been engaged and challenged, but they get really excited when they actually beat the level and earn what they need to make their own game.

Another fun day using the great web site Gamestar Mechanic where my students are learning about basic video game design concepts – such as rules and modifying the rules.


The great thing about the site is as the games get a bit more complicated, they are introduced to levels where they need to “repair” a broken level

As the students play through their levels, they are highly engaged and excited – not to mention extremely frustrated when they can’t beat a level or they get that instant gratification for completing a level and earning “sprites” and awards for their own video game

To help the students learn about modifying a game and learning how to create their own, the students helped me modify a game they are used to: Hopscotch. And a fun thing to do with the kids is when they complete a level, I reward them a badge on Edmodo

Gamestar Mechanic is an excellent tool that allows students to play, learn and create video games.

One of the most important parts of game design is down to its basic concepts of RULES. On Day 1 of the lesson, we discuss why rules are so important. As they set up their accounts, we play a few familiar activites to get them used to rules:
